If you are the partner of an Australian citizen, Australian permanent resident or eligible New Zealand citizen, then there are a number of temporary and permanent visa options available that will allow you to move to Australia to be with your partner.

The tern partner applys to:

  • people intending to get married
  • married (de jure) partners
  • de facto partners
  • interdependent partners (this includes people in same-sex relationships).

Spouse Temporary Visa and Permanent Visa
This is for partners of an Australian citizen, Australian permanent resident or eligible New Zealand citizen to enter and stay permanently in Australia. Starting out as a temporary visa, a permanent visa may be granted if the relationship is still ongoing after two years.

Prospective Marriage Visa
This visa allows the fiance(e) of an Australian citizen, Australian permanent resident or eligible New Zealand citizen to enter Australia and get married. Starting out as a temporary visa, once you are married you can apply for a permanent visa.

Interdependency Temporary Visa and Permanent Visa
Generally for people in same sex relationships this visa allows you to enter and stay in Australia with your partner. Starting out as a temporary visa, if after two years the relationship is still ongoing you can apply for permanent residency. The partner must be an Australian citizen, Australian permanent resident or eligible New Zealand citizen.
