According to The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS), Australia has been the only major Western economy to avoid recession. As a result, it became the most attractive destination to potential migrants from around the world.

The Rudd Government released official data that shows Australia avoided recession which settled in other countries in the world. Australia noted 0.4 per cent growth in GDP in the last quarter due to strong performance from exports.

"Australia is the fastest growing of all the major advanced economies, we have the lowest debt and lowest deficit of all the major advanced economies and we're the only advanced economy at present not in recession," Rudd said.

The government is planning to introduce a new aggressive economic policy to strengthen economic recovery. The Australian skilled migration program will ensure continuous flow of the skills needed to support infrastructural expansion and promote economic growth. However, the program will be reduced to 108,100 places in the financial year starting in July 2009. Currently, the top of the Critical Skills List is occupied by the health, IT and engineering sector.
