Increased language requirements for technical level occupations

Print E-mail

One of the most significant changes in the migration law from the 1st July 2009 will be the increase in IELTS test requirement for technical level occupations. It will be essential for potential applicants to demonstrate their English proficiency in the application process.

Until the 1st of July 2009, technical level occupations have been required to demonstrate only 5 in each band. This requirement will rise to 6 from July 2009.

After the 1st of July, there will be only one visa category that will enable applicants to be successful with a lower level of English (5.5 in overall band), which is known as Concessional Competent English. However, to qualify an applicant needs to be sponsored by a blood relative who lives in a designated area or nominated by a state or territory government. All individuals applying under this category are required to undertake an English course to enhance their English just after migrating to Australia and at their own cost.
