Australian government needs immigration to overcome recession

A report from the Australian government has made it clear that immigration will be paramount to the country regaining economic stability in the wake of the global financial crisis.

This year, migration quotas were slashed in order to ensure that employment levels among native Australians remained as stable as possible. Last week, the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) released data showing that the nationwide level of employment has remained remarkably stable, with a change of just 0.01 per cent being recorded last month, thus exemplifying Australia’s resistance to the worldwide recession.

Despite the cutting of Australian immigration numbers, the country has maintained as high a migrant intake as feasibly possible over the last year, and now that signs of an economic turnaround are becoming visible, the government will be looking to maximise Australian immigration in order to reap the benefits of an expanded workforce as the country gets back on its feet.

The current rate of unemployment in Australia stands at 5.7 percent, 2 per cent above the rate that represents full possible employment in the country. The government is now looking at implementing a number of incentives including tax cuts, cheaper petrol, low interest rates and cash hand-outs in order to attract foreign workers to its shores.
