British-trained doctors living high-quality lives in Australia |
|
Doctors from the UK and other European destinations are enjoying excellent lifestyles, high standards of living and very good salaries in the Australian “bush”. As is the case with so many professions in Australia, there is a lack of doctors, particularly in rural areas, meaning that certain towns are unable to provide adequate medical services. Recently, however, towns such as Alice Springs in Australia’s Northern Territory have attracted a number of foreign-trained doctors, many of whom are from the UK. An estimated 40 per cent of Australia’s 55,000 doctors were trained abroad, and special schemes have been implemented to help foreign-trained doctors to gain visas allowing them to live and work in rural areas. There are various incentives designed to attract doctors from abroad to migrate to Australia’s smaller, more rural towns, including not having to sit the Australian Medical Council Qualifying Exams usually required to practice in Australia. Other incentives include fast-track routes to citizenship and salaries of up to £135,000 per year. |
