Migration to South Australia hits record high

The Australia Bureau of Statistics (ABS) has released statistics showing that migration to South Australia is at a record high.

Over a twelve month period, ending in April 2007, South Australia saw a net gain in migration from abroad amounting to 12,600 people. Moreover, the first quarter of 2007 marked the largest quarterly increase in migration that the state has seen for 25 years.

The ABS also indicated that, with only 2 exceptions, every quarter since 1986 has seen an increase in migration to South Australia.

The current increase in migration to South Australia has set the state well on course to achieving its aim of 2 million residents by 2050, and, according to Michael Hickinbotham, the Australian Population Institute chairman, “the state is doing an excellent job.”
