Canada advised to increase skilled migration

A recent study by the Conference Board of Canada (CBC) has revealed that Canada needs to increase its annual intake of skilled migrants of it is to remain a competitive destination for foreign workers.

The CBC recommended that the intake for permanent residency should be increased from its current quota of 250,000 migrants to 360,000 by 2025 if it is to compete with the likes of Australia and New Zealand in terms of attracting skilled workers from abroad.

In 2007, a total of 476,000 migrants were accepted into Canada, however, over 50 per cent were temporary workers or foreign students.

Douglas Watt, Associate Director, Organizational Effectiveness and Learning for the Board, agreed that whilst Canadian immigration has been successful for the country and its economy, an increase of permanent residents is clearly needed:

“Canada’s permanent and temporary immigration systems are changing to better address the needs of business, provinces and migrants themselves,” he said.

“These changes are positive steps, but more needs to be done. Canada is competing with other countries for top international talent and a willingness to adjust programs and policies is the hallmark of successful immigration systems.”
