The Australian Healthcare System

by | Feb 13, 2024

Considering a move to Australia? Healthcare is pretty high up on the list when it comes to settling in, so here’s everything you need to know about the Australian Healthcare System.

National Healthcare

Medicare is the name given to Australia’s government-run healthcare system which is available in all states and territories. The aim is to give all parties access to comprehensive care which is either heavily subsidised or free at the point of use. The system comprises a broad spectrum of healthcare professionals such as doctors, specialists, and surgeons who are experts in their respective fields. The Medicare system is available on an equal footing to all Australian citizens and all permanent visa holders. Upon arrival in Australia you are required to register and complete several pieces of paperwork to gain access to Medicare. We advise doing so in person at a Medicare office within 7-10 days of your arrival. You will be required to present your passport and associated travel documentation as proof of identity and your right to reside. Private Healthcare

Some visa holders will be required to take out additional private healthcare insurance whilst living in Australia. With a competitive market offering a wide range of choice, many Australians also choose to take out their own private insurance. To encourage such practices the government levy a 1% tax on high income individuals who fail to do so. Every private scheme is different and it is important to thoroughly research what is available on the market before opting for a specific plan. The Bupa and iSelect websites offer an easy to navigate database of the available options so that you can make an informed decision. There are also several private plans directed specifically at those who have recently made the move to Australia. Whether you decide to go private or not, make sure to bring a comprehensive set of medical records that cover you and your family as you journey to your new home. This will help your health care professionals provide you with the excellent standards of care that the country is known for across the world.
