step 1 is to get your skills assessed by the Australian Computer Society (ACS) This can be a tricky one to ge through. Step 2 is DIMIA application. There is actually a 5 year window to settle in Australia after you have validated your visa - "no hurry to go to Australia - lots of hurry to have the vias in place.

Hello Wayne, You can do this by applying directly to NZ for a "de-facto" visa. You will need to satisfy the Government that your relationship is 2Genuine and committed" and then you are in. There are one or two other routes I could go through with you if you want to contact me directly - richard@my-oe.com

If you and your partner can prove 12 months of cohabitation - you could apply for an interdependency visa. If not you could go for that 12 months either here or in Oz. I dont really see a way forward for you under the skilled migration route given your history as described. Student visa's have a down side of "cost". I cannot offer any more suggestions.

provided you have the right skilled occupation you have not left it too late. Now is always the best time to apply. the rules generally get harder not easier...

There are a couple of possible entry routes for you - but not a "DIY" matter in my opinion. Get urgent help form a local (to you) Registered Migration Agent.
