TRA announces changes to trade assessment procedure

Print E-mail

Trades Recognition Australia (TRA) has announced that significant changes will be made to the way they conduct assessments for certain trade occupations. At present, migrants with certain occupations are required to undertake further courses of study upon entry to Australia, resulting in significant delays to their commencing employment.

In order to address this issue, TRA’s proposed changes see the introduction of competency based assessments in certain occupations and in certain countries. As of 1 July 2007, migrants will be able to undertake a single assessment that will meet the requirements of migration, qualifications recognition and occupations licensing requirements. Pre-migration skills assessments will be able to be undertaken in:
    • The United Kingdom
    • India
    • Sri Lanka
    • South Africa
    • The Phillipines

in the following trade occupations:
    • General Electrician
    • General Plumber
    • Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Mechanic
    • Motor Mechanic
    • Carpenter and Joiner
    • Electrical Power line Tradesperson
    • Cable Jointer

This means that migrants heading for Australia will be able to take up employment as soon as they arrive in the country:

It is thought that the rubric for trades assessment will comprise the following three stages:
    • self-assessed appraisal of the applicant’s suitability for their occupation in Australia
    • proof of the qualifications and relevant work experience the applicant possesses
    • practical assessment involving a technical interview and practical assessment.
