Regional 187 Visa Provides Skilled Workers an Alternative to Work in Australia
Since the second quarter of 2017, obtaining certain Australian work visas has been harder for foreign Nationals. But there is hope for you yet if you opt for a Regional visas which allows you to live and work in Australia on a temporary basis for 4 years.
Two of your options are the Regional Sponsored Migration Scheme subclass 187 and the Skilled Regional Provisional visa subclass 489. If you prefer a permanent residence visa, the former is your best option.
What is Australia’s Regional 187 Visa?
The 187 visa is a permanent residence visa that allows skilled workers with the opportunity to work in specific regions and areas with low population growth. It also enables employers to nominate and employ skilled foreigners, provided they meet the job qualifications for positions that have remained unfilled in the local labour market.
There is a list of approved postcodes under the 187 Visa that specifies a nominated employer’s place of business. Similar to other employer-sponsored visas, there is also a list of approved occupations for the 187 Visa.
This means not just any skilled worker may be approved for the 187 Visa. The good news is that the list is broader, providing more opportunities for skilled workers.
Are you eligible for the 187 Visa?
If you want to qualify for the Regional Sponsored Permanent Residence Migration Scheme visa subclass 187, you must be:
- Under the age of 45
- Must be employer-nominated for the 187 Visa
- Must be equipped with the skills and English competence required for the nominated position

- Requirements for training benchmark
