How to work as a plumber in Australia – Skilled Migration

Working in Australia as a trained plumber is a skill in high demand. In fact demand is vastly outstripping the supply of good, well qualified plumbing professionals.  Earning potential can also be high, once you’re fully licensed and operating.

So how do you work as a plumber in Australia?

A plumber in Australia usually works with water supply, gas, drainage, sewerage, heating, cooling and ventilation systems. He or she installs and maintains pipes, drains, gutters, metal roofs and similar equipment, among other tasks.

The application process

The application to become a plumber in Australia is a relatively straightforward process nowadays.  You’ll have to apply for a work visa, take any required tests/skills assessments and offer proof of your trading license.

The most common type of visa for such an application is called the General Skilled Migration, which offers permanent Visa for Australia and does not require sponsorship by an employer.

Study to be a plumber in Australia

If however you’re considering a career change while you’re living in Australia, you can study to become a qualified plumber, as there are a number of relevant courses you can take.  You can also work as a trade assistant for a company but this does not qualify you to work as a plumber, not at least until you obtain the relevant full license.

Do you need a licence to be a plumber in Australia?

Plumbers (along with Electricians) are usually the only two trades that require a license in which to operate.  You’ll also be required to obtain a state based licence in which to trade in your desired area.  There is no single government body for all trades. Applying for a licence and getting approved as a plumber in Australia can be a lengthy process, but there are common steps you can take.  So, whichever state you’re looking to work in, they will provide further information on such licenses and what is required of you in order to be successful.
