Emigrating to Australia. Australian Visas Explained

by | Feb 13, 2024

In 1949 Australia introduced its citizenship program. Since then there has been a whopping four million people who have settled, 95% of whom are now Australian citizens with a further million permanent residents who are entitled to apply for citizenship should they wish. If you are considering emigrating to Australia, you will need to apply for a visa, meet the criteria of the points test and ensure that you apply for the correct one.

There are different types of visas, the most common being the skilled visa. If you are a skilled worker or tradesperson and your occupation appears on the skilled occupation list here, (where your skills are in demand or there is a shortage of workers in your field of expertise) a Skilled Australian Visa would be the first option. There are several types of skilled visas and different Australian states require different criteria. The most popular visa is the Independent Skilled Visa which is suitable for those whose skills are in high demand and doesn’t require a family or state sponsor.

If you don’t quite meet the points test, there are other options including state nominated skilled visas and skilled regional visas. These are sponsored visas by regional territories and/or employers to fill positions that are suitable to your skillset / trade and are in demand in that area. Ensuring that you explore all the possible visas and that you apply for the right one doesn’t have to be a minefield. By employing an expert in Australian emigration (a Registered Migration Agent) will ensure that you choose the correct visa and avoid delays and mistakes.

There are, of course, other visas that may be more relevant to you. These include business visas, student visas, working holiday visas or family visas (spouse/de facto, aged and contributory parent visas).
