Emigration Guides: Australian Skilled Migration Assessment Facts

Being a skilled worker increases your chances of migrating to Australia. But you have to satisfy the Australian skilled migration visas assessment before making your move Down Under.

Australian Skilled Migration Assessment Facts

The skills assessment will determine if your work experience and skills meet the standards set, and whether or not the visa application you lodged will be approved.

A skill assessment is a requirement for skilled migration to Australia, especially if you apply as a graduate migrant, temporary graduate, employer-sponsored, or points tested visa. The first thing you need to do is to identify if your occupation is classified as trade or general professional.

Professional Occupations

Some examples of general professional occupations are archaeologists, botanists, chemists, drug and alcohol counselors, economists, education advisors, faculty heads, food technologists, geologists, historians, intellectual property lawyers, project builders, teachers of English and other languages, and zoologists.

Trade occupations, on the other hand, include air conditioning and refrigeration mechanics, automotive electricians, bakers, bricklayers, carpenters and joiners, general electricians, hairdressers, metal fabricators, plumbers and welders.

Once you determine if your occupation falls in either trade or general occupations category, you can start the skills assessment application process for skilled migration to Australia. The process differs from one occupation category to another.

Nominate an occupation

Prepare required documents

Some of the documents you need to submit as part of your application are proof of identity, qualification evidence, employment evidence, and resume. All of which must be in English.

Trade Occupations Skills Assessment

Depending on the assessing body, you will require between 3-6 years of employment experience (including apprenticeship/training/college) in the evidence you provide. Required documents include your resume/CV, trade qualifications, training, awards or certificates, and work and financial records.
