Emigration Guides: Melbourne For Migrants

by | Nov 18, 2018

Melbourne, Australia has been the World’s most liveable city in the world in 2016 and 2017 as voted in the economist and consistently among the “top 20 cities to live in” lists released by both Mercer and Time Out. Unsurprisingly, there is a huge demand from professionals worldwide to relocate to Melbourne for employment and permanent settlement.

Melbourne  A city of opportunities for migrants

Melbourne is an ever-expanding city and needs overseas professionals to augment its workforce. The first step is to check whether you have the qualifications required for the in-demand jobs such as Teachers, Electrical Engineers, Child Care Workers, Midwives, Chefs, Software Engineers, Plumbers, Welders and Pastry Chefs.

Trades are on the official visa sponsorship list for the State of Victoria

These and many other professions and trades are on the official visa sponsorship list for the State of Victoria, so your first step is to check whether your particular job is on the list. You do not require a job offer from an Australian company or organisation to take this step. However, you should find out how to pass your trade skills assessment and how to go about making sure your overseas qualifications are assessed by a recognised Victorian or Australian authority. If your CV and other documents are in a language other than English, you should ensure that your documents and certificates are translated into English by a certified translator.

After your skills are assessed

Once your skills have been assessed, you can apply for a skilled visa by submitting an Expression of Interest (or EOI) through the SkillSelect system. If your skills match what they are looking for, you will be issued an invitation by the relevant State Government, in this case Victoria.

If you emigrate to Australia from the UK without a job in hand, there are still avenues and resources that will lead you to a job. From professional networking to newspaper classified advertisements and job sites, there is a plethora of ways to look for employment in Melbourne.

Joining a trade or professional body

Joining a trade or professional body covering your profession or qualifications will also help. Finally, do not fail to show your enthusiasm for living and working in Australia when you submit job applications and attend interviews. Related work skills are important but many companies hire on personality too. It’s important for companies to know they can work with you and having personal interests that others can relate to will always help in an interview situation!
