7 Things No One Will Tell You Before You Move To Australia

Thinking about moving to Australia? There’s lots of information out there on shipping tips, house hunting and how to choose the right school for your kids, but there’s also a lot of stuff that expat forums for Australia won’t tell you. Here are 7 things you’re going to actually want to know before you move to Australia… Related reading: How much money do you need to move to Australia

Australian Visa Process

Something that few expats in Australia will tell you is that the visa processing time will most likely take up to 6 months to come through, depending on what type of visa you apply for. With this in mind - make sure you lodge your visa application ahead of your move to Australia with a Registered Migration Agent.

Sunscreen is next to Godliness

The UV rays are insanely strong in Australia, so incorporating putting sunscreen on every single day in the morning - as you would a moisturiser - or just stepping out of the shower is essential. Australia has one of the highest rates of skin cancer in the world - so make sure you enjoy all that beautiful weather responsibly.

Aussies Drive On The Left

If you’re emigrating to Australia from the UK then don’t automatically assume you have to drive on the other side of the road! The Aussies are just like the Brits and drive on the left - so no reverse coordination or left hand drives required!

Platypuses Are Poisonous

Ok, so there’s quite a few venomous critters to watch out for whilst in Australia including spiders and snakes, but did you know the male Platypus is venomous? So if you see one of these elusive animals don’t think you can go and pick it up - they’re cute, but you’ll regret it.

Vegemite Is Compulsory

Ok, so maybe not compulsory, but for any Marmite fans out there you’ll be offered Vegemite as a compromise, but in all honesty, it’s not Marmite so maybe familiarise yourself with online British food vendors such as www.britishsweets.com.au

Shark Attacks Happen

Something you don’t often hear about is shark attacks, but yes they do happen in Australia and you’ll hear about them more once you’ve moved to Australia. But they’re not often fatal and if you’re planning on swimming in the ocean then make sure you take notice of the warning signs on the beaches. After all Australia is well equipped for a beautiful life outdoors so they have found ways to cope with living alongside sharks.

There aren’t Kangaroos & Koalas Everywhere

These two animals may be synonymous with Australia - however you won’t see them absolutely everywhere. Just like most animals they prefer bushland, forests and parks so the only wildlife you're likely to see in urban areas are possums. Thinking about moving to Australia? What Our Clients Say

  • They explained each process of the application and kept us up-to-date on what was happening at each stage; telling us when we needed to be doing things and in what order – they made the whole process very straight forward.

  • Things are working out really well for us in NZ and I am more than happy for my comments to be posted on your website, I meant what I said regarding my positive view of your company and I would like people to know. There are so many companies offering the same kind of service, it’s hard to know who to trust and we had OE recommended by a friend and I would recommend to anyone without a second thought.

  • Thanks so much for all of your help and support with my application. Everyone there has been so responsive every time we’ve contacted you, it really does make a difference. I should refer our estate agent back in Edinburgh to you for some tips on customer communication! And we certainly would recommend to anyone thinking of making the move to contact the team at OE.

  • Now that I have scraped myself off the ceiling following the exciting news regarding my VISA grant I received on Friday, I just wanted to pass on my thanks for your part in making all of this possible. A number of years ago I had a phone consultation with another company (didn’t know about OE at the time) and came away disheartened as there thoughts on my success at this was far from favourable. Yet on conversation with Laurence he stated to me that I could get a visa without state sponsorship and it would take 7 months and that I should be wary of the IELTS test. If I have my dates correct it took about 9 months but would have been 7 were it not for the IELTS test! Again, your patience support and effort were greatly appreciated and I have passed on this experience to a number of friends who are also thinking of making the move and that they should use OE.
